PART 2: FROM EMISSION CALCULATION TO IMPLEMENTATION OF EMISSION REDUCTION PROJECTS

VCS and Gold Standard Methodologies | Carbon Credit Project Guide

Complete guide to VCS and Gold Standard methodological databases for carbon credit projects. Learn how these standards ensure rigorous MRV processes.

Methodological Database of Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) and Gold Standard

In the global voluntary carbon market, the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) and Gold Standard (GS) are the two most reputable and widely used certification standards. A core component of both systems is their extensive methodological database, which functions as a global "library of technical rules." These databases contain detailed, peer-reviewed methodologies that projects must follow to accurately measure, report, and verify (MRV) their emission reductions in order to be eligible for carbon credit issuance.

VCS - Verified Carbon Standard (managed by Verra)

The VCS program focuses on the accuracy, reliability, and scalability of greenhouse gas emission reductions. Its foundation is a portfolio of hundreds of approved methodologies covering nearly every conceivable project type, including renewable energy, forestry and land use, waste management, and agriculture. These methodologies are designed to ensure consistency and transparency, providing a robust framework for quantifying real emission reductions.

VCS is the most prevalent standard in the international voluntary carbon market. It is particularly well-suited for large-scale projects due to its flexibility, broad range of applicable methodologies, and wide acceptance among carbon credit buyers.39

Gold Standard (co-founded by WWF)

In addition to rigorous requirements for quantifying and verifying emission reductions, the Gold Standard places a unique emphasis on ensuring projects contribute to sustainable development co-benefits and engage in meaningful local stakeholder consultation. GS methodologies often integrate strict social and environmental safeguards and require projects to demonstrate positive impacts on metrics such as air quality, public health, education, or gender equality, alongside carbon reductions.

Gold Standard credits often command a premium price because they carry a comprehensive Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) narrative. They are highly valued by organizations seeking to demonstrate a holistic commitment to social and environmental responsibility through their climate actions.40

Significance for Businesses in Vietnam

Vietnamese enterprises aiming to develop projects for the international carbon market can freely access the VCS and GS methodology databases on their official websites. Selecting an appropriate and applicable methodology is one of the first and most critical steps in project development.

Understanding and correctly adhering to a chosen methodology from the project's inception helps to reduce project development costs and timelines, increase the likelihood of successful validation and verification, and enhance the credibility and marketability of the issued carbon credits.
